PACS
IMAGING SERVICES NEWEST ADVENTURE |
|
“What is
PACS?”
PACS stands for Picture Archiving and Communications System. It
captures, stores and distributes all radiology images
electronically using the hospital network. Studies can then be
viewed on electronic display stations, plain paper, or traditional
film.
“What are the advantages to PACS?”
PACS allows all of our information to be stored electronically,
thereby eliminating some of the problems associated with
traditional film. The
physician can view the images from their office as well as
multiple locations within the hospital. This will greatly reduce
time for viewing or having access to patient studies. The PACS
system allows physicians to simultaneously view studies with other
referring physicians as well as radiologists.
“What’s the difference between electronic viewing, plain paper
and film?”
• Electronic viewing occurs when an image is viewed on a computer
monitor. Physicians can receive these images in their office via a
CD-ROM or Internet Explorer. The software also allows for
manipulation of the images by brightening, zooming,
window-leveling and cropping.
• Plain paper is a full resolution printout of a study. It can
also be kept in the patient’s file for easy reference and viewed
anywhere.
• Film is the traditional method of viewing radiology images.
“What does PACS mean to CaroMont Health?”
CaroMont Health is expecting to see continuing improvements in our
radiology department due to PACS. Radiology has seen fewer repeat
studies, increased patient satisfaction, and increased
satisfaction for the physicians who refer their patients to our
department. We have reduced the number of lost studies as well as
reduced the time spent searching for and transporting film.
CaroMont Health is also enjoying the notoriety that comes with
cutting-edge technology.
PACS installation was completed in June of 2004 and is completely
functional throughout CaroMont Health. You can contact Christy
Ghorley at 704-834-3842 if you would like more information
regarding training or installation of PACS in your office. |
